Ecco il racconto di Ivonne che ha partecipato al progetto ESC presso la Biblioteca pubblica di Gdynia –
Coordinato dal Centre for Youth Cooperation and Mobility
Quale attività hai svolto principalmente durante il tuo progetto?
Durante quest’anno ho lavorato in una biblioteca, e il mio compito principale consisteva nell’occuparmi dell’aspetto socio-culturale. Ho organizzato attività rivolte alle persone del posto che usufruivano del servizio bibliotecario, come
il corso di uncinetto o il corso di lingua italiana, oltreché aver aiutato a mantenere i preesistenti progetti come il corso di arte. Inoltre, mi sono occupata di intrattenere e giocare con i bambini che venivano in biblioteca nel doposcuola.
Ho contribuito con entusiasmo, gioia, mindfulness, portando nel luogo di lavoro un’atmosfera serena e rilassata.
Ho imparato a gestire gruppi di persone e svolgere il ruolo di “leader”.
Ho scoperto gli ingranaggi di una biblioteca pubblica e come funziona.
Come hai vissuto la città di Gdynia, qualcosa che ti ha colpita in particolare nella vita Polacca?
Vivere a Gdynia è stato tanto bello quanto difficoltoso. Ho apprezzato le foreste, il mare, le attività culturali e sociali organizzate e finanziate dalla città. Anche vivere il freddo è stato un’esperienza unica, che ha portato la gioia fanciullesca della neve e del ghiaccio, così come la difficoltà della luce che tramonta alle tre del pomeriggio.
Complessivamente, sono soddisfatta di aver scelto la Polonia, perché ho scoperto una nuova cultura che sembrava tanto simile alla mia ma che è unica e merita di essere conosciuta nei suoi dettagli, che vanno al di la dei pierogi.
Qualche difficoltà che hai dovuto affrontare?
La barriera linguistica, non parlando il polacco ho avuto difficoltà a interagire con gli utenti della biblioteca, limitando la possibilità di avere un ruolo più attivo nel progetto.
Consiglieresti ad altre persone un’esperienza ESC? Perché?
Si, perché ti permette di acquisire nuove competenze e conoscenze sul mondo del lavoro, ti aiuta a entrare in contatto con persone che provengono da tutti gli angoli diversi d’Europa, ti permette di immergerti a pieno in una nuova realtà, conoscere un Paese nuovo, e ti da la possibilità di dedicare tempo soltanto a te stessa senza le responsabilità della vita adulta quali pagare l’affitto o le bollette.
E’ un anno di scoperta e curiosità pura e incondizionata, consiglio caldamente di sfruttare l’opportunità che ci viene offerta.

Ivonne’s volunteering experience was undoubtedly one of the best collaborations the organization has ever had the opportunity to carry out. From the very beginning, she stood out because of her enormous commitment, creativity, and initiative. She had more ideas than could realistically be implemented during the project period.
Ivi eagerly engaged both in project activities and in the everyday functioning of the library. She never needed reminders about her responsibilities — she would independently volunteer for different tasks, come to the circulation desk, help organize returned books on the shelves, and actively support the library team.
One of her original initiatives was a crochet club, which she led regularly. The meetings took place every week and were attended by 3 to 6 participants. One of the outcomes of these workshops was a small “Biblio-gallery” displaying the participants’ works. Ivi also conducted weekly Italian language classes from December to May, attended by 3 to 9 participants.
She was always exceptionally well prepared for all activities and workshops. Her sessions were engaging, creative, and far from repetitive — participants could clearly feel that they were taking part in activities led by someone truly passionate and dedicated.
An equally important part of the project was spending time with children visiting the library — playing together, board games, conversations, and building relationships. Ivi joined these activities very naturally and enthusiastically. She is an open and communicative person who easily builds relationships both with children and adult library users. Children often asked about her and became genuinely attached to her presence.
At the beginning of her stay, some readers even visited the library mainly to chat with her in Italian. One of the readers also invited her to take part in a photo session as a model wearing Baroque-style dresses, which shows how quickly she became part of the local community.
At first, she found it slightly more difficult to adapt to quieter days with a slower work rhythm, but over time she learned how to use that time in a very creative way. Additionally, Ivi wrote a book review, becoming involved in activities promoting reading and literature.
She was an ideal volunteer — independent, creative, responsible, and incredibly warm-hearted. Her presence had a very positive impact both on the library staff and on the readers.
